Wilfred C. "Sonny" Humbert, age 82 of Freeport, died Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 14 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. A private entombment will take place at a later date in the parish cemetery. Military honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Freeport. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday evening at the church in Freeport.
Wilfred Christ Humbert was born April 8, 1928 in Eden Valley, Minnesota to Herman and Pauline (Nathe) Humbert. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea. On July 27, 1946 he was united in marriage to Viola Roehrl in Overton, Alabama. Sonny owned and operated the International Harvester Implement in Freeport for 40 years, retiring in 1986. After his retirement, Sonny would spend the winter months in Florida and summers at his cabin on Big Birch Lake. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and the Knights of Columbus. Sonny was a life member of Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050 and a charter member of the Freeport Lions. He enjoyed fishing on Big Birch Lake and loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include his children, David Humbert of Freeport, Rick (Lois) Humbert of Bloomington, Roger Humbert of Sun City, Florida, Jane (Walter) Collymore of Jupiter, Florida, Cheryl (Jesse) LeClaire of New Munich, Mark (Mary Jo) Humbert of Glenwood, and Terri Dame (Rob Van Tresse) of Largo, Florida; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; and sister, Lucille (John) Raeker of Melrose.
Sonny was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Humbert on June 20, 2004; parents; daughter, Marilyn Loev; and sisters, Marceline Ricker and Rosemary Atkinson.
Serving as casket bearers will be Paul Humbert, Mike LeClaire, Ryan Humbert, Shannon Humbert, Eric Humbert, Alex Humbert, Ben Humbert, and Nathan Humbert. Cross bearer will be Brenda Kuehne and scripture bearer will be Allison Voss. Honorary bearers will be members of the Freeport Lions Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Albany Hospice.
