Walter A. Schmiesing, age 80 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully surrounded by his family Saturday, September 1, 2007 at St. Michael's Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 5 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Rev. James Statz will officiate with interment following in Calvary Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Walter Schmiesing was born September 29, 1926 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Ben and Augusta (Niehoff) Schmiesing. On June 15, 1963 he married Katherine Kinsella at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. The couple farmed in Getty Township, Stearns County, Minnesota until retiring in 1995 and moving to Sauk Centre. He had been employed at the Kraft Foods """ East plant in Melrose for 23 years. Since 2004 he had resided at St. Michael's Nursing Home in Sauk Centre.He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, Bishop Busch Council 4863 Knights of Columbus, and was a former member of St. Joseph's Society of Meire Grove.Walter enjoyed playing cards and following the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine Schmiesing of Sauk Centre; four children, Patricia (Barth) Vasey of Sauk Centre, Thomas Schmiesing of Sauk Centre, Cynthia (John) Banovetz of Minneapolis, and Terry Schmiesing of Brooklyn Park; ten grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Anthony (Aloise) Schmiesing of Sauk Centre, Bernice Peterson of Arizona, Adeline (Roy) Middendorf of Sauk Centre, Helen Miller of Sauk Centre, Eleanore (Leonard) Muellner of Cologne, Catherine Schmiesing of Sauk Centre, Isadore (Jan) Schmiesing of Swanville, and Joseph (Cynthia) Schmiesing of Sauk Centre.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Marina Atkinson and Erma Schauer; brother, Frank Schmiesing; and one granddaughter, Madison Schmiesing.Serving as casket bearers will be Tom, Terry, and Tim Schmiesing, Mark and Peter Marthaler, and Barth Vasey.
