Victor "Vic" Sunderman

Victor F. “Vic” Sunderman, age 91 of Melrose, passed away unexpectedly surround by his family on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 in the ICU at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 19 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. A private inurnment will be held in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

The Mass will be live-streamed and can be found on St. Mary’s website.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Victor Frank Sunderman was born August 31, 1932 in Melrose, Minnesota to Tony and Anna (Volbert) Sunderman. From 1953-1955, Vic served in the Korean War. On July 6, 1955 he was united in marriage to Dorine Gieske at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. They were married for 68 years. Vic worked at Lake Henry Creamery then moved to Melrose and worked at the creamery there. In 1960, he started working at the Kraft plant in Melrose until it burnt down in 1989. Vic took on side jobs such as painting buildings and bartending. He became the VFW manager and was also on the VFW Drill Team for 64 years.

Vic was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and VFW Post 7050. Vic always had a way of making people laugh with his many stories and jokes. He enjoyed playing cards, hunting, and spearing and spending time with his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all.

Survivors include his children, Gary (Mary) Sunderman of St. Joseph, Mark (Karen) Sunderman of Melrose, and Kay (Phil) Rolfes of Albany; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother, Bernie of Isle; sisters-in-law, Marian Goerdt of Melrose, Joannie Nathe of Anoka and Char Gieske of Anoka; brother-in-law, Jim Gieske of Melrose; and many nieces and nephews.

Vic was preceded in death by his wife, Dorine; parents, Tony and Anna; brothers, Hubert, Harry and Roman Sunderman; sister, Delores Bromen; sisters-in-law, Margie Sunderman, Mary Sunderman, Delores Sunderman, Aurelia Sunderman, Ruth Ann Gieske and Louise Gieske; and brothers-in-law, Jerry Bromen, Pete Gieske, Chuck Gieske, Joe Goerdt and Dick Nathe.

A special thanks to everyone in the ICU at the St. Cloud Hospital and all the staff at Parkview in Melrose, Minnesota.
