Vernon C. "Bud" Marthaler, age 84 of Sauk Centre, died Sunday, September 18, 2011 at St. Michael's Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 22 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Andrew Marthaler officiating and Rev. James Statz and Deacon Lawrence Kaas concelebrating. Interment will be in St. Alexius Cemetery in West Union.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Vernon C. Marthaler was born December 23, 1926 in Ashley Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Frank and Elvira (Uphus) Marthaler. Vernon grew up in West Union and attended country school through the 8th grade. On September 14, 1948 he married Helen Radermacher at St. Alexius Catholic Church in West Union. He spent all his life farming west of Sauk Centre.

Bud was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Catholic United Financial.

Survivors include his children, Steven Marthaler of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Sharon Marthaler of Sauk Centre, Tom (Linda) Marthaler of Sauk Centre, Cynthia (John) Eischen of Osakis, and Marvin Marthaler of Sauk Centre; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, James (Shirley) Marthaler of Sauk Centre; and sister, Rosalie Ecker of Shoreview.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Helen E. Marthaler on September 5, 2011; son, Robert Marthaler; parents, Frank and Elvira Marthaler; and an infant sister.

Serving as casket bearers will be Steven Marthaler, Tom Marthaler, Marvin Marthaler, Dan Marthaler, Greg Marthaler, and John Eischen. Cross bearer will be Angela Springer and scripture bearer will be Brenda Sunderman.
