Urban H. "Urb" Schulzetenberg, age 92, of Melrose, died Friday, February 12, 2010 in Melrose.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11a.m. Tuesday, February 16 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Vince Lieser officiating. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Council, Melrose Lions and the Knights of Columbus will pray at 6 p.m. followed by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard at 6:30 p.m. and parish prayers at 7 p.m. Monday evening.

Urban Henry Schulzetenberg was born November 1, 1917 in Milk River, Alberta, Canada to Bernard and Rose (Welle) Schulzetenberg. He served in the U.S. Army with the 13th Armored Division during World War II as an interpreter and was a POW in Germany for a brief time. On June 24, 1952 he married Marion Bringe at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. He co-owned and operated Schulzetenberg's Hardware in Melrose for over 40 years. He enjoyed life, his customers and meeting his friends for coffee and shaking dice at the café. The business was sold to his sons in 1985 but he remained active in the business to make sure things were done right. He would ask his sons often, "How is business?" Urb was a kind and generous man who loved his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting, baseball, bowling, playing cards, fishing, reading, traveling, and most of all, dessert after his meal. His famous line was, "What's for dessert?"Urb was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose, charter member of the Melrose Lions and recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. He was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Sts. Bernard & Elizabeth Council, Knights of Columbus, Council #1633, American Legion Post 101, Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050, and a former city council member.

Survivors include his wife, Marion Schulzetenberg of Melrose; children, Alan (Daria) Schulzetenberg of Melrose, Amy (Bob) Grider of Maple Grove, Kurt (Stefanie Moss) Schulzetenberg of St. Paul and Carl (Lori) Schulzetenberg of Avon; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson; brothers and sisters, Verena Thielen of Melrose, Ed (Lorraine) Schulzetenberg of Melrose, Joe (Jean) Schulzetenberg of Freeport; Evelyn (Ken) Cook of Bellevue, WA, Doris (Cyril) Braegelmann of Melrose, Alice (Al) Mayers of Eagan; sister-in-law, Lydia Schulzetenberg of Melrose; and brother-in-law, Joe Berscheit of Melrose.

Urb was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Caroline Mareck, Rita Hinnenkamp and Frances Berscheit; and brother, Roman Schulzetenberg.

Serving as casket bearers will be Bruce Shulzetenberg, Jim Schulzetenberg, Glenn Berscheit, Paul Thielen, Alan Mayers, and Brian Schulzetenberg. Cross bearer will be Cory Grider and scripture bearer will be Bennett Grider. Honorary bearers will be Ray Brickweg, Jim Ricklick, Maynard "Bud" Smith, Clarence Wenker, Dick Egan, Fran Hertzog, Pete Terres, Sr., and Robert Hinnenkamp.
