Rose M. Houk, age 66 of Sauk Centre, passed away Friday, February 5, 2021 at her home surrounded by her family after a long 26-year battle with cancer.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 10 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Jeremy Theis officiating. Inurnment will be at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. There will be no visitation prior to the Mass on Wednesday.
Rose Mary Schwinghammer was born May 5, 1954 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to Walter and Leona (Heimenz) Schwinghammer. She attended Elementary Catholic School in Elrosa, Minnesota and graduated from Belgrade High School in 1972. She continued her education at Willmar Vocational Technical College with an Electronics degree. She married Terry McBroom in 1972 and to this union they were blessed with three children Pam, Chad, and Jeremiah. While living in New London, Minnesota she worked as a waitress, at CSI Technologies, and with the New London Ambulance Service. Terry and Rose divorced and in 1990, Rose married Dan Houk. They were blessed with one son, Daniel. In 1992, the couple moved to Detroit Lakes where she did daycare and worked at Becker County Zoning. She also worked at United Music, Lakes Shirts, and New Dimensions Home Health. In 2012, she began working at Sauk Centre Alternative Senior Care.
Rose enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, sewing, and quilting which included many fidget quilts for hospice. She also enjoyed gardening, fishing, and travelling.
She attended St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Belgrade.
Survivors include her husband, Dan Houk of Sauk Centre; children, Pam McBroom of St. Cloud, Chad McBroom (Jessica) of Pennock, Jeremiah (Kelsey) McBroom of Detroit Lakes, and Daniel “D.J.” (special friend, Danielle Bosak) of Boise, Idaho; step children, Stephani (Mark) Johnston of Duluth, Andrew (Stephanie) Houk of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Jason Houk (friend, Christie) of Atwater; nine grandchildren, Paige, Preston, Cambry and Sawyer McBroom, Callista, Josey, Everett, and Charlie Johnston, and Zachary Houk; mother, Leona Schwinghammer of Belgrade; brothers and sisters, Pat Born of Waseca, Judy (Don) Potter of International Falls, Dennis Schwinghammer of Phoenix, Arizona, Ann Temple of Citrus Heights, California, David (Joyce) Schwinghammer of Belgrade, Richard Schwinghammer of Plymouth, Walter (Jackie) Schwinghammer of Newark, Arkansas, and Anthony (Shirley) Schwinghammer of Pueblo West, Colorado.
Rose was preceded in death by her father, Walter Schwinghammer; and brother, Allen Schwinghammer.
