Rosalia Mcdermond

Rosalia "Rose" McDermond, age 97 of Grey Eagle, died Thursday, December 1, 2005 at the Melrose Area Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 6 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Rev. Arlie Sowada will officiate with interment following in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Grey Eagle and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church chapel in Grey Eagle. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home in Grey Eagle followed by Christian Mothers at 7:30 p.m..

Rose McDermond was born January 28, 1908 in Grey Eagle Township, Todd County, Minnesota to George and Mary (Meagher) Marty. She was a granddaughter of Anton Marty, one of the first settlers of southeast Todd County, which became known as the Swiss settlement. She was the oldest of 12 children and was a lifelong resident of the Grey Eagle area. In 1928 she married Clinton R. McDermond in Grey Eagle and they farmed southeast of Grey Eagle until 1946, when they moved into Grey Eagle. For many years they also lived on the south shore of Mound Lake. Rose was one of the first residents of the Village View Apartments in Grey Eagle, where she had resided for the past 25 years, until she entered the hospital on November 25.

She was involved in many community services and activities, a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary. One of her favorite pastimes was raising a garden, which she did right up to this past summer.

Survivors include three sons, Richard (Kitty Ridlon) McDermond of Spanaway, Washington, Duane (Carolyn) McDermond of Pasadena, Maryland and William (friend, Joanie) McDermond of Grey Eagle and Brainerd; daughter-in-law, Dora Mae McDermond of Grey Eagle; brother, Hubert (Mary) Marty of Henderson, Nevada and Elk River; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and dear friend, Jean Peterson of Grey Eagle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary(Meagher) Marty; husband, Clinton McDermond on January 3, 1975; son, James McDermond on December 23, 1972; brothers, George, Mike, Charles, Louis, Jerome and Eugene Marty; sisters, Margaret Kutter Prozinski, Mary Jacobs, Nora Farrow Hemmi and Neda Donat.

Serving as casket bearers will be David, Thomas, Douglas, Kenneth and Mark McDermond and Bob Gagne. Honorary bearers will be member of the Christian Mothers.
