Richard N. "Dick" Wanderscheid, age 72 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully at his home in Sauk Centre Township, Stearns County, Minnesota surrounded by his family Friday, September 26, 2014 after a year-long battle with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 2 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Rev. Greg Paffel will officiate with interment following in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Richard Nicholas Wanderscheid was born June 4, 1942 in Le Mars, Iowa to Roman and Celesta (Ruba) Wanderscheid. He was a 1960 graduate of Sauk Centre High School. He then learned the masonry trade while working for Ken Plueger Construction in Le Mars, Iowa until 1965 when he began working for Rice Building Systems constructing steel buildings. On January 1, 1968 he married Mary Lou Claude at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Padua, Minnesota. In 1970 he started Wanderscheid Construction and also opened Sauk Centre Ready Mix Plant in 1977. After selling the business in 1985 he began farming in Sauk Centre Township, Stearns County and also operated the Hayloft Restaurant from 1989 to 1997. He continued farming until his passing. He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre and the Knights of Columbus.

Dick enjoyed fishing, bowling, watching the Minnesota Vikings, watching his crops grow, giving advice to his boys, going to snowmobile races to watch his sons race, especially the Eagle River World Championships, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Wanderscheid; four sons, Brian Wanderscheid, David (Cindy) Wanderscheid, Mark (Rosalie) Wanderscheid, and P.J. (Jeni) Wanderscheid, all of Sauk Centre; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Jacob, Luke, Miah, and Mason; sister and brothers, Connie (Ken) Plueger of Le Mars, Iowa, Bud Wanderscheid of Clarissa, and Jim (Sharon) Wanderscheid of Nemo, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roman and Celesta Wanderscheid; father and mother-in-law, Herb and Winifred Claude; and an infant brother.

Serving as casket bearers will be Brian, David, Mark, P.J., Nicholas, and Keith Wanderscheid. Cross bearer will be Connie Plueger and scripture bearer will be Ken Plueger. Honorary bearers will be Bob Pauly, Will Otte, Greg and Bob Duchene, Virgil Marthaler, Rick Varner, Dan Merten, Butch VonWahlde, and Jim Determan.
