Rembert A. "Bert" Sand, age 86 of Avon, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 1, 2017 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 7 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 5 p.m. with a rosary by the St. Joseph's Men's Society and Catholic Order of Foresters at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Rembert Alois Sand was born April 11, 1931 in New Munich, Minnesota to Leo and Catharina (Thull) Sand. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1952 to 1956. Bert came home from the military to marry Lorraine Caspers on August 18, 1954, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Meire Grove. After their marriage, the couple moved to Spokane, Washington where Bert was stationed in the military until 1956. The couple then moved to Minnesota and Bert started farming in 1957 on a farm near St. Wendel until 1965 when he bought the home farm south of New Munich. He enjoyed watching the Twins and amateur baseball, fishing, going to the casino, and driving his John Deere tractors.

Bert was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, St. Joseph's Men's Society, St. Leo Court 786 Catholic Order of Foresters, and the American Legion Post 101.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine Sand of Avon; children, Shirley (Paul) Kleinwachter of Big Lake, Richard (Catherine) Sand of New Munich, Karen (Bryan) Pierskalla of Rochester, Debbie (Kevin) Wolbeck of Albany, Paul (Lisa) Sand of Avon, and Joyce (Leroy) Gertken of Albany; 19 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Maynard (Mel) Sand of St. Wendel, Marlene Determan (Maurie) of Morris, Floriann (Ray) Mayers of New Munich, Syl Sand of St. Cloud, and Jean (Clarence) Enneking of Albany; and sisters-in-law, Betty Sand of Albany, Eileen Sand of Avon, and Donna Sand of Freeport.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ronald Sand; granddaughters, Kayla and Marie Wolbeck; brothers, Edmund, Ervin, Werner, and Jerome Sand; sisters, Pauline Kruschek, Joan Otto, and Lucille Sand; brother-in-law, Sy Determan; and sisters-in-law, Carrie Sand and Betty Sand.

Serving as casket bearers will be Nolan Sand, Devin Gertken, Joshua Linn, Nick Kleinwachter, Ryan Sand, and Nathan Sand. Cross bearer will be Alyssa Sand and scripture bearer will be Caden Sand. Gift bearers will be Shirley Kleinwachter and Joyce Gertken. Eucharistic Ministers will be Ray Mayers and Donna Sand. Petitions and eulogy will be read by Christina Hopke.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
