Raymond "Cy" Wald, age 86 of Sauk Centre passed away Thursday, June 30, 2005 at St. Michael's Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, where he had been a resident for the past eight months.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Rebecca Thomas officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard. Private inurnment will be at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls.
Friends may call at the church in Sauk Centre from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
Cy Wald was born January 23, 1919 in Bowdle, South Dakota to John and Frieda (Haar) Wald. He attended a local country school near his home. At the age of 17 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) for four years, where he learned the trade of cement masonry. He then spent four years in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in Belgium, France and Germany.
On March 19, 1943 he married Clara Oksal of Newell, South Dakota. They had one daughter. He married Alice Gilbertson on April 19, 1975 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua, Iowa. He worked on road construction in North and South Dakota, Montana, Yellowstone Park and Minnesota.
Cy loved camping, fly fishing, baseball games and watching boxing. After their retirement, he and Alice spent their summers as campground hosts for the Chippewa National Forest at Knutson Dam on Cass Lake and their winters in McAllen, Texas. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and a life member of Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853 of Sauk Centre.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Wald of Sauk Centre; daughter, Paula (Donald) Bump of Brighton, Colorado; step-daughters, Judy (Charles) Finch and Jo (Patrick) Glinnon, all of Sauk Centre; step-sons, Larry (Liz) Gilbertson of Elk River and Neal (Stephanie) Gilbertson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; step-daughter-in-law, Peggy Gilbertson of Richfield; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; ten step-great-grandchildren; sister, Hildegard "Toots" (Martin) Wood of Murdock; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Clara; brothers, Joe and Marvin Wald; infant sister; and step-son, James K. Gilbertson.
