Monica A. "Moni" Schmidt, age 82 of Melrose died Tuesday, April 13, 2004 from a long battle with cancer at the Melrose Area Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 17 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Ken Thielman officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 11 to 1 p.m. on Saturday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 6:30 p.m., Christian Mothers will pray at 7 p.m. and immediately following will be prayers from the American Legion Post 101 Auxiliary Friday evening at the funeral home.
Monica Schmidt was born on September 18, 1921 in Albany, Minnesota to Frank and Gertrude (Ohmann) Hofmann. As a young woman, she worked in Albany at her father's business where Norb and she met. They married on April 16, 1941at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany and had six children. She was employed by the Melrose School District as a cook for quite a few years. After they retired, she loved to camp, play cards and travel. She had traveled to Medjugorje twice. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers and the American Legion Post 101 Auxiliary.
Survivors include her children, Dan Schmidt (Gloria) of Melrose, Carol Gullickson (Thomas) of Bloomington, Michael Schmidt (Jinny) of Clarksburg, WV, John "Sparky" Schmidt (Mary Sagissor) of Melrose, Jane Schmidt of Las Vegas, NV, and Mary Davis (Steve) of Prior Lake; 14 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Victor Hofmann, Tony Hofmann (Marilyn) of St. Cloud, Bob Hofmann (Darlene) of Twin Cities, Helen Crowe of WI, Clara Baggenstoss of IA, Lola Hemker of Melrose, and Mary Ann St. Arnault of Denver, CO.
Monica was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Gertrude Hofmann; husband, Norbert "Smitty" Schmidt on January 10, 1996; brothers and sisters, Joseph, Vernon, Larry, Pat, Florence, and Jane; and one infant brother.
Serving as casket bearers will be Tim Welle, Joe Tschida, Rick Serafin, John Schmidt, Kevin Gullickson and Blake Welle. Serving as cross bearer will be Jackie Tschida.
