Melvin J. "Mel" Jacobs, age 74, of Melrose, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 24, 2014 at the St. Cloud VA Health Care System in St. Cloud, Minnesota.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 29 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Melvin Joseph Jacobs was born December 12, 1939 in Farming, Minnesota to Joseph and Margaret (Eisenschenk) Jacobs. He served in the U.S. Army from 1962 to 1964. Mel was an over the road truck driver, working for various companies. He enjoyed playing Bingo and visiting with his with his family and friends.
Mel was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose.
Survivors include his children, Jim (Colleen) Rempfer of St. Paul, John Rempfer of Melrose, and Julie Soular of St. Paul; grandchildren, Brooke Rempfer, Brady and Cole Soular; sisters, Beaty Wensman of Cold Spring and Dorine Schwindel of Belgrade; brother-in-law, Alvin Gerads of St. Cloud; and sister-in-law, Karen Stern of Paynesville.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Morgan; brother, Harold Jacobs; sister, Elaine Gerads; and brothers-in-law, LeRoy Wensman and Robert Schwindel.
Serving as casket bearers will be Robert Schwindel Jr., Allen Vogel, Jason Wensman, Dale Gerads, Don Gerads, and Peggy Engler. Cross bearer will be Debbie Schwindel.
