Melvin O. Asmus, age 83 of Grey Eagle, died on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 at Long Prairie Memorial Hospital in Long Prairie, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 23 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle. Rev. Ron Tibbetts will officiate with interment following in Lakeview Cemetery, Grey Eagle.

Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church in Grey Eagle.

Melvin Asmus was born on November 15, 1920 in Round Prairie Township, Todd County, Minnesota to Ernest and Emilie (Schmidt) Asmus. Melvin was baptized and confirmed in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Long Prairie Township. He attended Greenwood Country school for 8 years. He married Elaine M. Guse on February 11, 1947 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Bend. They farmed for 37 years in Round Prairie Township on the home farm. They then moved to Grey Eagle in December of 1983. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served as a board member, and Grey Eagle Senior Citizens. Melvin enjoyed playing cards, traveling, fishing and deer hunting.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Asmus of Grey Eagle; children, Judy Hederman (Dan) of Columbia Heights; Karen Hennen (Rich) of Grey Eagle; brothers and sisters, Vern Asmus of Grey Eagle, Wilma Schwanke of Grey Eagle, Ruby Alsleben of Alexandria, and Pete Asmus (Bev) of Long Prairie; four grandchildren, Kelly Herold, James Hederman, Lila Joarnt and Waylon Hennen; five great-grandchildren, Breanna Hederman, Madison Herold, Bethany Herold, Nicole Hennen, and Devan Joarnt.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Emilie Asmus; brother and sister, Arden Asmus and Lenora Kuehne; infant brother, Ernest, Jr.; and one granddaughter, Lisa Marie Hennen.

Casket bearers will be Bob Asmus, Darrell Asmus, Duane Guse, Leland Buchholz, Bill Schwanke and Wayne Schwanke.Honorary bearers will be Roger Ilgen, Lloyd Strassburg, Lester Zellgert, Orval Rosenow, Lloyd Schwanke, Ted Koehn, Dean Schwanke, Rev. Fred Kutter, and Allen Beilke.
