Melda D. Wig, age 99 of Sauk Centre, died Thursday, February 1, 2007 at St. Michael's Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 3 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. The Rev. Steve Hayden will officiate with interment following at Sunset Cemetery in Montevideo, Minnesota.
Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service.
Melda Wig was born March 11, 1907 in Montevideo, Minnesota to Robert and Emma (Wegner) Fandrey. She taught in rural schools near Montevideo before her marriage. On September 20, 1931 she married Emil Wig at St. John's Lutheran Church near Montevideo. The couple farmed near Montevideo for six years and moved to Montevideo in 1937. There she was a homemaker and was later employed as a sales clerk at S & L Department Store. She was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where she taught religious education classes and Sunday school. Her husband died in 1962 and she moved to Sauk Centre in 1963. There she was a counselor at the Minnesota Home School for ten years, retiring in 1973. Recently she had resided at Lakeshore Estates and since 2001 at St. Michael's Nursing Home.Melda was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Ladies' Aid and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of the Business and Professional Women (BPW) and St. Michael's Hospital Auxiliary.After her retirement, Melda enjoyed activities and attending events with her many friends. She was a great gardener, loved fishing, enjoyed needlework and made afghans for all of her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include three children, Ardis (Orville) Botner of Garfield, Robert (Marilyn) Wig of Milaca, Larry Wig of Murphy, North Carolina; daughter-in-law, Ruth Wig of Brainerd; nine grandchildren, Karen Lloyd, Kathleen Anderson, Curtis Wig, Lloyd and Lance Wig, Richard and Susan Botner, Jeffrey and Timothy Wig; ten great-grandchildren, Laura Gonshorowski, Katherine, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Megan and William Wig, Noelle Wig, Thomas and Court Anderson and Kayla Wig; sister-in-law, Marj Fandrey of Montevideo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emil Wig; son, Donald Wig; sister, Elsie Stube; and brother, Edwin Fandrey.
Serving as casket bearers will be her grandchildren. Honorary bearers will be the staff of St. Michael's Nursing Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church.
