Maynard L. "Bud" Smith, age 90, of Melrose, died Sunday, September 11, 2011 at the St. Michael's Nursing Home in Sauk Centre.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 15 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be at the MN State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, Minnesota following the service.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday at the church in Freeport.
Maynard Leroy Smith was born January 10, 1921 in Woodside Township, Otter Tail County, Minnesota to Roy and Goldie (Melius) Smith. He grew up on the family farm. He attended School of Agriculture at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He served in Alaska, Philippine Islands, and Honolulu. After the service, he went to Dunwoody University in Minneapolis, graduating in 1947. On June 14, 1949 he married Teresa Olmscheid at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Bud worked for Western Electric and retired in 1977. He then drove milk truck in Melrose and worked at the Hardware Store. In Bud's retirement, he made hug-a-bears for the Telephone Pioneers; they were given to traumatized children from ages one to 101.
Bud was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Royal Neighbors of America, Telephone Pioneers, and a life member of the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050.
Survivors include his children, Lynn (Dan) Hansen of Fleming Island, FL and Patricia (Brian) Dahlen of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Mark and Paul Dahlen and Roy Hansen; great-grandchildren, Mark, Jr. and Ryleigh Jade.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Teresa Smith on June 22, 1997; and sister, Shirlie Baber.
Serving as casket bearers will be Mark Dahlen, Paul Dahlen, Roy Hansen, John Olmscheid, Kurt Olmscheid, and Steven Olmscheid.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
