Maurus B. Blommel, age 82, of Freeport, died Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 31 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Freeport. Goldenaires Senior Citizens will pray at 5 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 5:30 p.m. and the St. Joseph's Men's Society, Sacred Heart Catholic Aid Society, and the Albany Knights of Columbus at 8 p.m.

Maurus Blommel was born December 6, 1924 in Millwood Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Joseph and Elizabeth (Koetter) Blommel. On September 5, 1950 he married Rita Rueter at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. The couple farmed in Millwood Township, Stearns County until retiring in 1983 and then moved to Freeport. Maurus was a crop adjuster for Dawson Hail of Fargo, ND for several years. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, playing cards, and watching all sports. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, St. Joseph's Men's Society, Sacred Heart Catholic Aid Society, Albany Knights of Columbus, and a trustee for Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 23 years.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Blommel of Freeport; children, Ron Blommel and his wife, Marj of Eagle Lake, Tom Blommel and his wife, Mary Kay of Freeport, Gene Blommel and his wife, Marlene of Freeport, Carol Funk and her husband, Ron of Sauk Centre, and Brenda Gruber and her husband, Reinie of Clear Lake; 18 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; sister, Marie Eilers of Clear Lake; brother, Joe Blommel and his wife, Fran of Albany; sister-in-law, Helen Blommel of Melrose; and brother-in-law, Eddie Pohlmann of Melrose.

Maurus was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Aloys Blommel; brother, Alphonse Blommel and his wife, Jenny; sister, Bernadine Pohlmann; and brother-in-law, Amby Eilers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Sacred Heart School in Freeport.

Serving as casket bearers will be Mike Elfering, Mark Elfering, Paula Elfering, Russ Funk, Lori Lemm, and Andy Blommel. Cross bearer will be Darin Blommel and scripture bearer will be Jennifer Lang. Mass servers will be Sheena Funk and Dacia Funk. Gift bearers will be Megan Gruber, Jamie Gruber, Austin Gruber, and Tina Gruber. Lectors will be Leah Trierweiler and Sherry Eveslage. Petitions will be read by Abby Larson and Pam Laing. Honorary bearers will be Roman Meyer, Elmer Frericks, LeRoy Hoeschen, Ed Job, Joe Blommel, Ed Pohlmann, Lawrence Sand, Jerome Rosen, Richard Schiller, Alvin Gerads, Ron Rieland, Leo Eveslage, Alcuin Notch, Adolph Wensmann, Harry Kerfeld, Ed Hennen, Hank Middendorf, Justin Schulte, and Ray Hoppe.
