Marty Lou G. Metzger, age 79 of Melrose, died unexpectedly on Friday, January 6, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 13 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose. Rev. Marvin Enneking will officiate with Deacon Ernie Kociemba assisting. Interment will be held on Monday, January 16 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 5 p.m. followed by the American Legion Auxiliary and the Christian Mothers at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Marty Lou Genevieve Anderson was born January 10, 1932 in Mankato, Minnesota to Axel and Lucille (Hatcher) Anderson. She was united in marriage to Virgil Metzger on October 3, 1953 at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Minneapolis. The couple resided in Melrose since 1963. Marty was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting, reading, crossword puzzles, canning, bowling, cross stitching, playing cards and dominos, and watching game shows on TV.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose, Christian Mothers, American Legion Post 101 Auxiliary, and the Red Hat Ladies. Survivors include her husband, Virgil Metzger of Melrose; children, David (Amy) Metzger of Lino Lakes, Cindy (Bruce) Anderson of Andover, Kathy (Dan) Soland of Broken Arrow, OK, and Paul (Suzanne) Metzger of St. Louis Park; 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Marty Lou was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Noel Schulte; and granddaughter, Vicki Fitzgerald.

Serving as casket bearers will be Nathan Metzger, Nicholas Metzger, Tyler Metzger, Jacob Metzger, Amanda Metzger, and Noah Anderson. Cross bearer will be Derek Soland and scripture bearer will be Olivia Soland. Honorary bearers will be the Christian Mothers and the American Legion Post 101 Auxiliary.
