Sophia Martha S. Lindback, age 90 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, February 27, 2007, at St. Michael's Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 5 at First Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. Rev. Steve Hilde will officiate with interment following in Long Bridge Lutheran Cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and Monday at the church one hour prior to the service.
Martha Lindback was born January 16, 1917, in Eddy County, North Dakota to Wilhelm and Olga (Skogley) Engel. On June 6, 1934, she married Harry Lindback in Lakota, North Dakota. The couple resided near Hamar and Tolna, North Dakota and in 1949 moved to the Little Sauk, Minnesota area, where they farmed. After her husband's death in 1969, she moved off the farm but continued to live in the country and was employed as a cook at the Palmer House and the Ding Dong Caf?. She later provided day care at her home for several years. In 1996 she moved to Sauk Centre and since July of 2006 had resided at St. Michael's Nursing Home.Martha was a member of Little Sauk-Long Bridge Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid and had served as a 4-H leader.She was a wonderful cook and baker, who will be remembered as someone who loved having a houseful of people to cook for. No matter how many people were there, she always found room for one more. In her later years, she enjoyed watching bull riding, figure skating and the Twins baseball games on television.
Survivors include five children, Vernon (Marcia) Lindback of Farmington, Margaret (Duane) Ecklund and Lois (Don) Wiener, all of Sauk Centre, Sharon (Harold) Walter of Osakis, and Muriel (Duane) Eggebraaten of Morris; daughter-in-law, Carol Lindback of Clarissa; 18 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; sisters and brother, Mildred Blank, and Fern Ahrens, both of Sauk Centre, and Virgil (Jan) Engel of Belgrade; sisters-in-law, Elaine Engel of St. Paul and Irene Engel of Sauk Centre; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry Lindback on January 2, 1969; three sons, Luverne, Harvey, and Mark Lindback; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one great-great-grandchild; brothers and sisters, Wilhelm, Fred, Sidney, Archie, and Richard Engel, Florence Warner and Lucille Renken.
Serving as casket bearers will be John Ahrens, Dean Boyer, Lyle, Randy, Richard, and Stanley Engel.
