Marcella Scherping

Marcella C. Scherping, age 95 of Freeport, died Thursday, March 5, 2009 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 9, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday at the church in Freeport.

Marcella Ceceilia Pogatchnik was born July 23, 1913 in St. Anthony, Minnesota to Joseph and Bertha (Bartholdi) Pogatchnik. On September 23, 1935 she was united in marriage to Bernard H. "Ben" Scherping at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Marcella farmed near St. Wendel until 1973 when they moved to Freeport.She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, Goldenaires Senior Citizens, and the Sacred Heart Catholic Aid Society. Religion was very important to Marcella. Every day she said her prayers and was praying for all of her family and friends. She also enjoyed playing cards, especially Farkle and 500. Marcella was also known for her cooking. When someone would come to her house to visit, they knew they were going to be fed, and fed well. She would always be seen carrying her purse and a basket of homemade bread buns when she was the one doing the visiting.

Survivors include her children, Everett (Beverly) Scherping of Freeport, Arthur (Agnes) Scherping of Winsted, Virgil (Elaine) Scherping of Winsted, Daniel (Evelyn) Scherping of Cedar, Thomas (Anita) Scherping of Helena, Montana, and Linda (James) Breth of Holdingford; 32 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Marcella was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bernard H. "Ben" Scherping on May 6, 1983; brothers and sisters, Victor, Herb, Art, Albert, Felix, Florence, Evelyn, Ceceilia, Emily, and Lucille.

Casket bearers will be Everett Scherping, Linda Breth, Arthur Scherping, Virgil Scherping, Daniel Scherping, and Shawn Scherping. Cross bearer will be Melyssa Sakry and scripture bearer will be Tiffany Pritchard.
