Malvina Berg, age 86 of Sauk Centre, passed away Saturday, November 5, 2005 at St. Michael's Hospital after a courageous four year battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 8 at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre. Rev. Don Kirsch will officiate with interment following in St. Paul's Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.
Malvina Berg was born to William and Katherine (Ripka) Gritzmacher on May 14, 1919 on the family farm in Getty Township, Stearns County, Minnesota, near Sauk Centre. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church where she remained an active, life long member. She graduated from Sauk Centre High School in 1936, attended beauty school in Minneapolis and returned to own and operate the Personality Beauty Shop in downtown Sauk Centre.
On September 4, 1948 she married Sylvester J. Berg. She was a homemaker who enjoyed baking bread, crocheting and sewing. She also worked as a clerk at Mac's Midway Grocery and Leora's Fabric Shop. Throughout the years she maintained her beauty operator's license and worked at Eileen's Beauty Shop. She was an avid bowler and participated in ladies league bowling for almost 60 years. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and playing cards with friends.
She was active in her church as a member of Ladies Aid, treasurer for Zion's Aid Association for Lutherans for many years and helped to support the yearly quilt auction at Lutheran Island Camp.
Survivors include her son, William Berg of Sauk Centre; her daughters, Elaine and Leon Oman of St. Paul, Cathy and Paul Michaelson of Granite Falls; grandchildren, Tony Michaelson, Katie Michaelson, Jeff Oman and Kristin Oman; brothers, Alvin and Merlin Gritzmacher of Sauk Centre.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Katherine (Ripka) Gritzmacher; her husband, Sylvester "Ves" Berg on March 26, 1990; daughter, Malvina Berg in 1972; and brother, Robert Gritzmacher in 1988.
Serving as casket bearers will be Tony and Katie Michaelson, Jeff and Kristin Oman, Dick Ripka and David Otte. Honorary bearers will be Hilda Otte, Marilyn Schroeder, Adeline Wolbeck, Leora Calkins, Kathy Primus, Lori Quistorff and Janet Minette.
Memorials are preferred to St. Michael's Hospice in Sauk Centre.
