Lydia Rose Marthaler was born February 18, 1923, in Meire Grove, Minnesota. She was the youngest of nine children and the last remaining family member of the Simon and Rose (Schwegman) Marthaler family. She married Roman Anthony Schulzetenberg on October 14, 1947, in Melrose where they raised four children. Lydia is fondly remembered for the love and care she showed to each family member. She created a strong family by providing a place to gather and share good times. Her amazing meals and generous love fed our hearts. Lydia was an excellent bridge player and was often in more than one club at the same time. She was a top-notch seamstress having made much of her daughters’ clothing in their early years. Before marrying Roman, Lydia worked for the Melrose Beacon newspaper as the society editor for two years. She and Roman traveled far and wide and enjoyed life to the fullest.
She is survived by her children, James (Anita Gille) Schulzetenberg of Duluth, Joyce (Steve) Grong of Gary, South Dakota, Renee Marchel of Brainerd, and Lea (Neal) Borgerding of Freeport; ten grandchildren, Mara, Ben, Will, Paul, Evan, Aron “AJ”, Tyler, Courtney, Austin, and Alex; and eight great-grandchildren, Josie, Kalli, Kendra, Paxton, Jameson, Nora, Allison, Blake, and one on the way.
Lydia was preceded in death by her husband, Roman on April 18, 2006; her parents, Simon and Rose; and her siblings, John, Albert, Alois, Ervin, Lawrence, Edwina Meyer, Gilbert, and Mayme Imdieke.
The family thanks the many friends and relatives who visited Lydia at Pine Villa over the last 3 ½ years and especially the staff and volunteers of Melrose CentraCare Care Center and CentraCare Hospice for their compassionate care of Lydia.
