Louis C. Kortan, age 79 of Sauk Centre, died Sunday, October 9, 2011 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 14 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Todd Schneider officiating. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Military honors will be provided by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.

Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Parish prayers will be held at 7:45 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Louis Charles Kortan was born July 6, 1932 in Sauk Centre, Minnesota to William and Anna (Chermak) Kortan. After graduating from Sauk Centre High School in 1952, Louie entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1954. On November 23, 1957 he was united in marriage to Lucille Benoit at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rockville, Minnesota. The couple lived in Crystal, Minnesota until moving back to Sauk Centre with their family in 1969. Louie worked for Wonder bread as a sales rep for 23 years. After retiring, he worked at CarQuest delivering parts for ten years. Most recently Louie delivered prescriptions for Coborn's Pharmacy. Louie enjoyed bowling with friends for many years, helping the Sauk Centre football team as part of their "chain gang" and shaking dice at the Ding Dong Café for coffee. Spending time at the Sauk Centre Country Club golfing with friends was his passion.

Louie was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church where he served as an usher, Bishop Busch Council 4863 Knights of Columbus, Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853, American Legion Post 67, and the Sauk Centre Country Club.

Louie is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lucy of Sauk Centre; children, Mary (Greg) Glavan of Delano, Karen (Brad) Black of Blaine, Chip (Denise) Kortan of Sauk Centre, and Chris (Lee) Olmschenk of Sauk Centre; ten grandchildren, Jenifer DeGraw, Jesica Glavan, Keather Richards, Kelsey and Kara Black, Kayla and Tracy Kortan, and Zachary, Zander, and Zaron Olmschenk; brother, Donald (Linda) Kortan of Coon Rapids; and sister, Arlene (Charles) Litchy of Stillwater.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Skyler Olmschenk on October 23, 2004.

Serving as casket bearers will be his granddaughters, Jenifer DeGraw, Jesica Glavan, Kelsey Black, Kara Black, Kayla Kortan, and Tracy Kortan. Serving as cross bearer will be his granddaughter, Keather Richards and scripture bearer will be his grandson, Zachary Olmschenk.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
