Loretta B. Kortan, age 97 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully surrounded by family Monday, May 12, 2014 at CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 15 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Greg Paffel officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be at 5:30 p.m. followed by Christian Mothers, St. Theresa's Mission Group and Catholic United at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
Loretta Barbara Vogel was born March 14, 1917 in New Munich, Minnesota to Joseph and Catherine (Poepping) Vogel. She married Frank O. Kortan on June 2, 1937 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose, Minnesota. The couple farmed north of Melrose, then near Meire Grove and later in Sauk Centre Township, Stearns County. She moved to Sauk Centre in 1969 and was employed at the Burger Hut for 12 years.
Loretta was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, St. Theresa's Mission Group and Catholic United. She enjoyed cooking, baking, quilting, crocheting, trips to the casino and spending time with her family.
Survivors include five children, Bernice (Ernest) Uhlenkamp of Sauk Centre, Darlene (John) Dols of Sauk Centre, Jeanette (Joseph) Loehr of Melrose, Michael (Theresa) Kortan of Sauk Centre and Julie Grams of St. Cloud; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Lorraine (Alquin) Gangl of Melrose, Mary Ann Arnzen of Melrose, Eugene (Thriesella) Vogel of St. Cloud and Tom (Marlene) Vogel of Sauk Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Kortan on June 19, 1968; her parents; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Eugene Moening; two grandchildren, Marie and Charles Uhlenkamp; brothers, Roman, Leander, Warner, Ervin, Elmer and Joseph Vogel; and infant sister, Viola Vogel.
Serving as casket bearers will be Matthew Grams, Steve Dols, Brian Moening, Tom Uhlenkamp, Joey Loehr and Dean Gould. Cross bearer will be Nancy Bomber and scripture bearer will be Courtney Moening.
