Lola C. Berg was born September 7, 1920 to Carl and Sadie (Westover) Hesse. She grew up in Sauk Centre where she graduated from high school. Lola married Alphonse Berg on January 16, 1943 in Berkley, California, where they were both doing their part in the war effort. When Allie returned home from the war, they made their home in Sauk Centre where they raised their family. Lola was a Cub Scout Leader, long time member of the Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853 Auxiliary, American Legion Post 67 Auxiliary, Sinclair Lewis Aerie 3847 Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, Mother's Council, Sauk Centre Seniors, Christian Mothers, and Saint Paul's Catholic Church. She enjoyed telling stories of her childhood, employment at Swift and Company, the Waldorf Hotel, the Belmont Café and Fingerhut. But her favorite job was being a lunch lady at the Sauk Centre public school. She found time for baking, sewing, crafting, knitting, fishing, dancing and flower gardening between playing cards and going to garage sales. She looked forward to returning to Arizona every winter, going by herself for several years after Allie passed away. She enjoyed family gatherings, especially as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along. Lola moved to Getty Street Assisted Living in 2007 where she became reacquainted with some old friends and made many new ones, never turning down a chance play cards.
She is survived by her daughters, Barb (Larry) Mingus of Cape Coral, FL, Kitty (Dan) Determan of Side Lake; sons, James "Mike" Berg of New Hope, and Chuck (Judy) Berg of Sartell; grandchildren, Shane (Tiffany) and Erik (Stacy) Determan, June and Jill Berg, Mat and Steph Berg; great-grandchildren, Elayne and Emily; and sister, Betty Thielen of Big Lake.
Lola was preceded in death by her husband, Alphonse Berg; parents, Charlie and Sadie (Westover) Hesse; son, Raymond; infant daughter, Kathleen; and siblings, Pearl, Esther, Gladys, Don, Lynn, Doris, Chuck, James and Jack.
Casket bearers will be Shane, Erik, Tiffany, and Stacy Determan, June, Jill, Mat, and Steph Berg.
