Leona R. Frieler, age 98 of Melrose, formerly of Greenwald, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, September 14, 2018 at the CentraCare Health Nursing Home in Melrose, Minnesota.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 21 at Saint Andrew's Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating and Deacon Jim Schulzetenberg concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church in Greenwald. The Christian Women will pray a rosary at 6:30 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.
Leona Rosalia Schulzetenberg was born December 21, 1919 in Greenwald, Minnesota to Anton and Christine (Meyer) Schulzetenberg. She married John Frieler June 20, 1945 at Saint Andrew's Catholic Church in Greenwald. The couple made their home near New Munich where they farmed and raised their family. The couple retired from farming and moved to Greenwald in 1981. Leona moved to Parkview in Melrose in 2014 and then into the nursing home in 2015. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, quilting, embroidering, sewing, and baking.
Leona was a member of Saint Andrew's Catholic Church in Greenwald and Saint Anne's Christian Women.
Survivors include her children, Rodney (Darlene) Frieler of St. Cloud, James Frieler of New Munich, Steven (Jane) Frieler of Paynesville, Rose Mary (Larry) Van Beck of Melrose, Ruth Ann (Stanley) Heinen of Spring Hill, and Thomas (Linda) Frieler of New Munich; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Schulzetenberg.
Leona was preceded in death by her husband, John Frieler on January 1, 1991; parents; twin daughters; and brothers, Melvin Schulzetenberg and Alphonse (Celesta) Schulzetenberg.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Serving as casket bearers will be Tony Frieler, Jeff Frieler, Matt Van Beck, Jason Heinen, Paul Heinen, Nick Frieler, and Dustin Frieler. Cross bearer will be Amy Heinen and scripture bearer will be Lori Dingmann. Serving as honorary bearers will be the St. Anne's Christian Women. Words of remembrance will be said by Mary Frieler. Lectors will be Scott Frieler and Cassy Zierden. Gift bearers will be Jill Van Beck and Jody Wrobel.
