Lawrence B. Marthaler, age 82 of Sauk Centre, died on Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 5 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Rev. James Statz will officiate with interment following in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call from 3:30 to 9 p.m. Friday and 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Christian Mothers will pray at 4:30 p.m. followed by United Veterans prayer service at 7 p.m. and parish prayers at 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home in Sauk Centre.
Lawrence B. Marthaler was born on October 17, 1920 in West Union, Minnesota to Albert and Antoinette (Deters) Marthaler. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On May 17, 1948 he was united in marriage to Irene Kinsella at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. The couple farmed near West Union and Holdingford before moving to a farm in Getty Township, Stearns County in 1959. They moved to Sauk Centre in 1992. Lawrence had been employed as a school bus driver for Sauk Centre Public Schools for 20 years. He had also been employed as a mechanic for Bromen Implement in Sauk Centre and worked at Dick Otte's Sales Barn for several years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church and American Legion Post 67.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Marthaler of Sauk Centre; nine children, Mary (Don) Beckering of Minnetonka, Michael (Patty) Marthaler of Effie, Mark (Dorothy) Marthaler of Sauk Centre, Rose (Harvey) Schlichting of Little Falls, Peter (Laurie) Marthaler and Lorenz "Dusty" Marthaler, all of Sauk Centre, Therese (Steven) Roberts of Bloomington, Bill (Mona) Marthaler of Melrose, Dan (RaeAnn) Marthaler of St. James; daughter-in-law, Sondra Marthaler of St. Cloud; 23 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters and brothers, Sr. M. Andre Marthaler, OSB of St. Joseph, Albert (Bernice) Marthaler of Hewitt, Mother Mary Peter Marthaler, OSC of Sauk Rapids, Sr. M. Germana Marthaler, OSB of East Grand Forks, Joan (Charles) Pfannenstein of St. Louis Park, Imelda (John) McCann of Clear Lake, Rev. Andrew Marthaler of Elbow Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Patrick; infant son, Joseph; grandson, Jason Schlichting; sister, Annella Hougnon; brothers, Paul and Anthony Marthaler.
Serving as casket bearers will be his grandsons, Shaun Tabatt, Adam Beckering, David Roberts, Joe, Brian and Eric Marthaler. Cross bearer will be Jean Schlichting and scripture bearer will be Diane Marthaler.
Memorials are preferred to Veterans Affairs Medical Center, One Veterans Drive, Minneapolis, MN 55417.
