Kenneth J. "Ken" Hartung, age 64 of Freeport, passed away on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 25 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Upsala with Rev. Jeremy Theis officiating. Interment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Cemetery in St. Francis.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church in Upsala. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the church.
Kenneth John Hartung was born June 5, 1954 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Anthony and Ann Marie (Pick) Hartung. He met his wife, Peggy Erickson at the Golden Eagle and they got married on December 13, 1975 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Together, Ken and Peg owned Hartung Sales with their children at their sides. Ken loved his work and his customers. He loved being busy and having his kids with him because someone had to "hold the flashlight." Ken taught his kids the value of hard work and how to "put a little elbow grease into it." He was the jack of all trades from building barns to planting crops. Ken enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a man of faith, he loved life, and he was proud of his family.
Ken was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church for 43 years.
Survivors include his wife, Peg Hartung; children, Fred Hartung (fiancé, Pepper Moyer), Jeannie (John) Stich, Jessica (Philip) Adrian, Rebecca (Greg) Symanietz, Thomas (Kimberly Pantzke) Hartung, Katrina (Andrew) Kloss; 23 grandchildren, Samantha, Faith, Hope, Noah, and Grace Hartung, Michael, Christopher, Abigail, and Isabelle Stich, Ryan, Jacob, AnnaMarie, and Allyson Adrian, Charlie, Alex, and Amelia Symanietz, Sierra, Stella, and Poppy Hartung, and Ava, Lucy, Jack, and Henry Kloss; siblings, Gerald (Bernice) Hartung, Mary Jane (Gerry) Boeckermann, Doris (John) Leen, Eugene (JoAnn) Hartung, Renee (Greg) Wensmann, LeRoy (Diane) Hartung, Lillian (John) Arnzen, Darlene (Glen) Engelmeyer, Melvin Hartung, and Gerianne (Jeff) Fleischhacker.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Ann Marie Hartung; infant daughter; parents-in-law, Wally and Millie Erickson; grandson, Joseph Symanietz; sisters, Janet and Bernadette Hartung; and brother, Isadore Hartung.
