Joseph B. Van Havermaet, age 87 of Sauk Centre, died Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at St. Michael's Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 17 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. Rev. Todd Schneider will officiate with interment following in the parish cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Sauk Centre United Veterans Honor Guard.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be at 5:15 p.m. followed by United Veterans prayer service at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
Joseph Van Havermaet was born September 14, 1920 in Melrose Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Bernard and Susan (May) Van Havermaet. He spent one year in the Civilian Conservation Corps and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He then worked for Kraft Foods in Melrose for three years. On January 3, 1949 he married Magdalen Krantz at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. The couple made their home in Sauk Centre. He then re-entered the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, serving at Fort Bliss, Texas. Upon returning from the service, he was employed at Franklin Manufacturing in St. Cloud until retiring in 1982.He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, Paul F. Donart VFW Post 2853 of Sauk Centre, and the Runestone Amateur Radio Club in Alexandria.
Survivors include his wife, Magdalen "Maggie" Van Havermaet of Sauk Centre; six children, David (Ruth) Van Havermaet of Blaine, Wayne "Barney" (Deb) Van Havermaet of Burtrum, Tom (Marilee) Van Havermaet of Inverness, Illinois, Diane (Bob) Pallow of Sauk Centre, Dale (Jane) Van Havermaet of Hawley, and Gary Van Havermaet of Las Vegas, Nevada; 20 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Lawrence (Lorraine) Van Havermaet of Rochester, Mabel Rousselange of Browerville, Art Van Havermaet of Sauk Centre, Veronica Van Havermaet of Sauk Centre, Francis (Sonja) Van Havermaet of Seattle, Washington, Regina Coan of Clearwater, and Cecelia (Tony) Bieringer of Round Prairie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Serving as casket bearers will be Eric, Scott, Jason, Brian, Andrew, and Joseph Van Havermaet. Cross bearer will be Luke Van Havermaet, scripture bearer will be Patrick Van Havermaet, gift bearers will be Jill Van Havermaet, Becky Hodnefield, Stacy Maciej, and Genna Van Havermaet, and lector will be Scott Van Havermaet. Honorary bearers will be Bill Klundt (KGØDX), Bruce Halverson (KIØOM), Bill Baetan (KØPIZ), and Bill Zehrer.
