James "Jim" Kane, age 80 of Sauk Centre, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer Thursday, October 7, 2010.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 11 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. The celebrant will be Rev. Tim Wenzel with Rev. James Statz concelebrating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 8 to 10 a.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be held at 5:30 p.m. followed by Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.
Jim Kane was born December 7, 1929 in Duluth, Minnesota to William and Marie (Wenzel) Kane. The family moved to Little Falls when he was an infant and then moved to West Union at the age of seven. He worked as a hired man on a farm until his marriage to Mary Jane Kraemer on September 29, 1953 at St. Alexius Catholic Church in West Union. He worked on a Whitney Farm until he rented his own farm near Westport. In 1964 they purchased their first farm near Padua and farmed until his retirement in 1990. Since then the couple resided in Sauk Centre and he worked part-time for several years for United Agri Products.
Jim was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church and Bishop Busch Council 4863 Knights of Columbus. He had been a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Sauk Centre.Jim enjoyed watching Minnesota Twins baseball games, watching and teasing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was known for his wit and wonderful sense of humor.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Kane of Sauk Centre; six children, Carol (Joe) Dockendorf of St. Cloud, Susie (Ken) Rutten of Osakis, Tom (Jan) Kane of Sauk Centre, Deb (Pat) Robischon of Sauk Centre, Janet (Dave) Kubinski of Sauk Centre, and Bonnie (Joel) Athmann of St. Cloud; 14 grandchildren, Nathan, Cory, Jamie, Jordan, Meggie, Alex, Matt, Tony, Tara, Lindsay, Austin, Allison, Jared, and Kaylee; eight great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Joyce Hansen of Rockville, Patty Neal of Sauk Centre, Marilyn (George) Middendorf of Sauk Centre, Jack (Lola) Kane of Maple Grove, and Charlie (Sharon) Kane of Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Marie (Wenzel) Kane.
Serving as casket bearers will be his grandsons, Nate and Cory Dockendorf, Matt and Tony Middendorf, Alex Rutten, and Jared Athmann. Cross bearer will be Lindsay Robischon and scripture bearer will be Meggie Dockendorf.
