Herbert Schmidt

Herbert J. "Herbie" Schmidt, age 85, of Sauk Centre, died peacefully Wednesday, September 12, 2018, at the CentraCare Health Hospital in Sauk Centre, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, September 17 at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Fr. Jim Maderak officiating. Military honors will be by the Waite Park American Legion Post 428 following the Mass. A private burial will be at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls on Tuesday.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Herbert Joseph Schmidt was born February 7, 1933 in Elrosa, Minnesota to Albert and Clara (Kleinschmidt) Schmidt. He attended school in Elrosa and later served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1954. Herbie worked at Elrosa Elevator for over 20 years. On September 1, 1962, he married Lorraine Duevel at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. He also worked at St. Michael's Hospital until his retirement in 1985. Herbie enjoyed hunting, fishing, spearing and making his own decoys for spearing. He also enjoyed driving, going to the casino, and watching the Vikings and Twins.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre, St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Waite Park, and American Legion Post 428 in Waite Park.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lorraine Schmidt of Sauk Centre; children, Joyce (Tom) Pettit of Sauk Centre, Joan (Jerome) Hommerding of St. Cloud, and Jane Barlau (Steve Klug) of Albany; six grandchildren, Mitch Pettit (Talayia Skillings), Jessica Pettit, Amanda (Jesse) Schloegl, Jenny (Joe) Coenen, Rylie Hommerding, and Brandon(Katrina) Barlau; great-grandchildren, Connar, Dominic, Rhys, Sondra, Kaylie, Jaxson, Eyan, Sam, Zach, Jayden, Landyn, Tanner, Tate, and a great-granddaughter due in January; and sisters-in-law, Pauline Schmidt of Alexandria and Delores Schmidt of Elrosa.

Herbie was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Tanner Barlau; brothers, Elmer, Dan, Vern, and Gordon; sister, Monica Klemz; sisters-in-law, Armelia Schmidt and Bernice Schmidt; and brother-in-law, Lou Klemz.

Serving as casket bearers will be Jerome Hommerding, Joe Coenen, Mitch Pettit, Brandon Barlau, Steve Klug, Jesse Schloegl. Cross bearer will be Zach Coenen and scripture bearer will be Rylie Hommerding. Readers will be Jenny Coenen, Jessica Pettit, and Amanda Schloegl. Gift bearers will be Connar Pettit, Sondra Schloegl, and Jayden Coenen. Pall bearers will be Joyce and Tom Pettit.
