Helen Schubkegel was born September 3, 1924 in Ada, Minnesota to Rev. Theo E. and Marie (Wendorf) Schubkegel. The family grew up 7 ½ miles from Ada in the parsonage without water or electricity. After the three boys were born, Helen was the first girl, very pretty. She loved her mother and helped at home a lot. At times in cold weather she would open her coat and protect her sister on their 2 ½ mile trip to country school. She was excellent at cooking and played the church organ while in high school. She took care of the family when her youngest sister was born. After the boys left home, she milked the cows before leaving for high school. When she was in the nursing home she played the organ for services. In other services she picked up the hymn books, passed them out, and later collected them to be put away. When very ill with pneumonia, Naomi asked if she would like to go to heaven and be with mother and father, she said "Yes". The day before her death, she was told that Jesus loved her. She was content with that.
Survivors include her brothers, Rev. Theodore W. Schubkegel and his wife, Quinta of Rio Rico, Arizona, and Francis Schubkegel and his wife, Joyce of New Ulm; sisters, Renata Schubkegel of Richfield, Naomi Nycklemoe and her husband, Jim of Richfield, and Hattie Larson and her husband, David of Fridley; sister-in-law, June Schubkegel of Blue Springs, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Theodore E. O. and Marie Schubkegel; brothers, Alvin and Alfred; sister-in-law, Lorraine Schubkegel; and niece, Joanne Ona.
