Gertrude M. Hellmann, age 85 of Saint Rosa, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 15, 2008 in Pine Haven at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17 at Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be held at 5 p.m. followed by the St. Rosa Christian Mothers at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
Gertrude "Gertie" Hellmann was born September 15, 1922 in St. Martin, Minnesota to Peter and Mary (Mohs) Schaefer. She was united in marriage to Joseph Hellmann on November 27, 1946 at Saint Martin Catholic Church in St. Martin. After their wedding, Joe and Gertie moved to Brainerd and helped on a farm bottling milk. In 1954, they moved to their own farm near Swanville until 1963 when they moved to a farm near St. Rosa where they eventually retired. Gertie moved to the Pine Villa Care Center in 2000 where she resided until her death. She was a member of Saint Rose of Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa and the St. Rosa Christian Mothers. Gertie enjoyed embroidery and gardening.
Survivors include her children, Caroline (Tom) Jacobs of Melrose, Linda (friend, Jeff) Hellmann of St. Cloud, Duane Hellmann of St. Rosa, Steve (Lorrie) Hellmann of Holdingford, and Will (Carol) Hellmann of St. Stephen; 13 grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Matt Schaefer, Herman Schaefer, Ben Schaefer, Margaret Kinzer, and Ann Lauer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Hellmann on December 2, 1991; brothers, Henry, Nick, Frank and Norbert; sisters, Clara Burg and Susan Kuhl.
Serving as casket bearers will be Nancy Gaspard, Tim Jacobs, Theo Jacobs, Christopher Hellmann, Brandon Hellmann, and Andrew Hellmann. Cross bearer will be Amanda Hellmann and scripture bearer will be Stephanie Hellmann.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association.
