Eugene E. "Gene/Hippie" Athmann, age 69 of Spring Hill, died on Monday, July 9, 2012 at the St. Cloud Hospital with his family at his side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 12 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill with Rev. Omar Guanchez officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 5 p.m. followed by a rosary from the St. Michael's Men's Society at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Eugene Edwin Athmann was born October 21, 1942 in Richmond, Minnesota to Aloys and Nelle (Winter) Athmann. On August 29, 1964 he married Carol Ann Imdieke at St Andrew's Catholic Church in Greenwald. In 1964 Gene started his own business, Athmann Plumbing, and retired in March of 2005. He enjoyed golf, country music, his hobby farm and animals and watching and attending his grandchildren's sporting events and recitals.

Gene was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spring Hill, St. Michael's Men's Society, Hindenberg Riders Snowmobile Club in Greenwald and a former member of the Greenwald Lions. He loved the game of baseball. He played for and managed the Greenwald Cubs as well as coached his sons Little League and Amateur League Baseball Teams. He was inducted into the MN Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in October of 1998.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Athmann of Spring Hill; sons, Kevin (Mary) Athmann of Hopkins and Kirk (Terri) Athmann of Paynesville; grandchildren, Logan, Peyton, Emily, Maxwell, and Mitchell; sisters and brothers, Patricia Kruzel of Eden Valley, Alice Athmann of Spring Hill, Marcie Welle of Melrose, Joey (Lou) Athmann of Spring Hill and Tony (Phyllis) Athmann of Benson; and mother-in-law, Mayme Imdieke of Greenwald.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; three infant children; brother, Stanley Athmann; sister, Josephine Ertl; sister-in-law, Victoria Athmann; brothers-in-law, Frank Kruzel, Sylvester Ertl and Donald Welle; and father-in-law, Raymond Imdieke.

Serving as casket bearers will be Dale Athmann, Jerry Kruzel, Jeff Welle, Glen Ertl, Rick Athmann, and Kenny Athmann. Cross bearer will be Emily Athmann and scripture bearer will be Logan Athmann. Honorary bearers will be Dave Nathe, Jerry Trisko, Joe Schwieters, Harold Rademacher, Chico Welle, and the St. Michael's Men's Society.
