Ervin H. Vogel, age 85 of Melrose, died Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 23 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Vince Lieser officiating. Interment will be in Saint Patrick's Cemetery. Military honors provided by the Melrose Veteran Honor Guard.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be held at 6 p.m. followed by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard at 7 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.

Ervin Herman Vogel was born December 8, 1924 to Joseph and Catherine (Poepping) Vogel in New Munich. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Navy aboard a destroyer in the South Pacific with the seventh fleet. He was united in marriage to Susan Arnzen on September 28, 1946 at Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Melrose. Ervin worked for the City of Melrose for 34 years, retiring in 1983. Ervin was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose and the Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050. He enjoyed listening to music and watching television, especially the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Vogel of Melrose; children, Arlene (Arnold) Roerick of Minnetonka, Joan (James) Botz of Rockville, Geraldine (Fred) Viere of Freeport, Daniel (Phyllis) Vogel of Arlington, Texas, Darrell (Deb) Vogel of Champlin, David (Lisa) Vogel of Melrose, Tim (Roxane) Vogel, of Melrose, and Allen (Diane) Vogel of Melrose; 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Loretta Kortan of Sauk Centre, Lorraine (Al) Gangl of Melrose, Mary Ann (Elmer) Arnzen of Melrose, Eugene (Theresa) Vogel of St. Cloud, and Tom (Marlene) Vogel of Sartell.

Ervin was preceded in death by his son, James Vogel; brothers, Roman, Leander, Elmer, Warner, and Joe Vogel; and sister, Viola Vogel.

Serving as casket bearers will be Dean Roerick, Vicki Herdering, Keith Vogel, Brian Roerick, Chris Vogel, Rebecca Hayhurst, Matthew Vogel, and Bailey Vogel. Cross bearer will be Jeff Botz and scripture bearer will be Miles Vogel.
