Ervin R. Schmiesing, age 89 of Melrose, formerly of Sauk Centre, died Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the Melrose Area Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 19 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Ken Thielman officiating. Interment will follow in St. Paul's Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 8 to 10:30 a.m. to Wednesday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be held at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Ervin Robert Schmiesing was born September 28, 1922 in Bluffton, Minnesota to Henry and Catherine (Hinnenkamp) Schmiesing. He left school in the 10th grade to help work on the family farm, and later got a job at the Sauk Centre Creamery where he met Pauline Toenies while picking up milk from her family's farm. On June 6, 1955 the couple was married at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church in Sauk Centre. They farmed in Sauk Centre Township, Stearns County until retiring in 1988. Since 2010 he had resided at Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose.

Ervin was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting deer, pheasants, and ducks with his sons and nephews and ice fishing. He especially enjoyed their trips out West. Ervin loved spending time with his grandchildren and sitting down to his favorite dessert, cake and ice cream.

Survivors include his children, Michael "Mike" Schmiesing of Sauk Centre, William "Bill" Schmiesing of Sauk Centre, Sharon (Jerry Hagemeier) Schmiesing of St. Cloud, Paul (Linda) Schmiesing of Sauk Centre, and David Schmiesing of St. Cloud; six loving grandchildren, Broden Hagemeier, Derek Hagemeier, Nathan Hagemeier, Nicole Schmiesing, Christopher Schmiesing, and Timothy Schmiesing; and brother, Clarence Schmiesing of Sauk Centre.

Ervin was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline on February 11, 2008; infant son, Joseph Schmiesing; parents, Henry and Catherine; and sister, Gaudentia Mitchell.

Serving as casket bearers will be Broden Hagemeier, Christopher Schmiesing, Timothy Schmiesing, Alfred Mitchell, Ralph Mitchell, and Jim Toenies. Serving as scripture bearer will be Nicole Schmiesing and cross bearer will be Marie Mitchell.
