Ervin H. "Erv" Mayers, age 85 of Melrose, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at the Pine Villa Care Center in Melrose, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 18 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Ken Thielman officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Knights of Columbus, Council #1633, St. Leo Court 786 Catholic Order of Foresters and the Melrose Lions will pray at 6 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening.

Ervin Herman Mayers was born February 5, 1925 in St. Martin Township, Stearns County to Herman and Anna (Moser) Mayers. He married Monica Rosen on May 21, 1947 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, Minnesota. Erv was a president for two years of the Melrose Lions where he received the Melvin Jones Award. He was Grand Marshal in the Freedom Fest Parade in Melrose in 2006. Erv was one of the founding members of the Credit Union, Meadowlark Country Club, and Melrose Chamber of Commerce. He was school bus operator for 50 years. Erv and Monica owned and operated Mayers Inc. which is made up of charter buses, a fleet of school buses and an excavating business.

Erv was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose, Knights of Columbus, Council #1633, St. Leo Court 786 Catholic Order of Foresters and the Melrose Lions.

Survivors include his children, Darlene (Ray) Ostendorf of Melrose, Carol (Romie) Bertram of Melrose, Bob (Julie) Mayers of Melrose, Deb (John) Rassier of Sidney, Montana, and Mark (Mary) Mayers of Melrose; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one step-grandson; one step-great-grandson; brothers, Ray (Alda Mae) Mayers of New Munich, Donnie (Jeanette) Mayers of Melrose, and Sylvester Mayers of St. Paul; brothers-in-law, Al (Norma) Rosen of St. Cloud and Norb Humbert of New Munich.

Erv was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Monica Mayers on July 14, 2006; grandson, Scottie Mayers; sisters, Loretta Mayers, Luella Humbert, and Viola Scholz; brother-in-law, Jerry Scholz.

Serving as casket bearers will be Shawn Mayers, Michael Mayers, Eric Mayers, Jessica Mayers, Ryan Bertram, and Sara Peterson. Honorary bearers will be Ralph Inderrieden, Bob Hollermann, Clyde Tise, Ed Sand, Ralph Muellner, and members from the Melrose Lions. Cross bearer will be Missy Johnson and scripture bearer will be Gerry Osendorf. Mass servers will be Tony Niehaus and Joe Soenneker. Lector will be Gerry Osendorf and gift bearers will be Amanda Mayers and Amy Rassier. Eucharistic ministers will be Julie Mayers, Deb Welz, and Rosie Ostendorf.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Mary's Catholic School in Melrose.
