Elaine M. Asmus, age 89 of Grey Eagle, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Monday, September 2, 2019 at the CentraCare Nursing Home in Long Prairie, Minnesota.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 7, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle with Rev. Michael Bitz officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Grey Eagle.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Elaine Mabel Asmus was born October 18, 1929 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota to Wilbert, Sr. and Minnie (Sabart) Guse. She attended school in Grey Eagle. On February 11, 1947 she was united in marriage to Melvin Asmus at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Bend. After their marriage, she and Melvin farmed in Round Prairie Township. In 1985 Elaine and Melvin retired and moved into town. Elaine began working at the Grey Eagle School in the school kitchen, until the school closed.
She was an active member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle. Elaine was a Sunday School teacher at St. John’s as well as a cook in the church basement for many funerals. She was a member of the Hannah Altar Guild and Ladies Guild member. Elaine was president of the Grey Eagle Senior Center and an active promoter of the Rock-A-Thon fundraiser. She was also on the Board of Directors at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls and on the board for Grey Eagle Housing. Elaine loved gardening, canning, baking, quilting and embroidery, and enjoyed playing cards with her card groups.
Survivors include her two daughters, Judy (Dan) Hederman of Columbia Heights and Karen (Richard) Hennen of Grey Eagle; three grandchildren, Kelly (Chris) Herold, Lila (Rick) Anderson, and Waylon (Laura) Hennen; six great-grandchildren, Breanna Hederman, Madison Herold, Bethany Herold, Nicole Bailey, Devon Joarnt, and Elizabeth Hennen; three great-great-grandchildren, Annabelle Bailey, Wyatt Schettler, Michelle Trapp, and one on the way; and brother, Gary (Deborah) Guse of Harris.
Elaine was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Asmus; parents; grandchildren, Lisa Hennen and James Hederman; brothers and sisters, Willard Guse, Walda Stueck, Richard Guse, Norman Guse, Wilbert, Jr. “Bud” Guse, Harlen Guse, and Shirley Johnson.
