Edwin Sand

Edwin M. "Eddie" Sand, age 90 of Melrose, passed away Monday, June 19, 2017 at his home in Melrose, Minnesota.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 23 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich with Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in New Munich.

Edwin Sand was born March 31, 1927 in Grove Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to Herman and Elizabeth (Humbert) Sand. He married Hildegard Fuechtmann on September 7, 1948 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich. After their marriage, they began farming southwest of New Munich. In 1974 Hilda passed away and in 1979 Ed moved to Melrose. Ed's carpentry skills are well known in the many barns and buildings across Stearns County. He has many fond memories of working with horses in his early years.

Survivors include his children, Gerri (Dick) Frieler of Pequot Lakes, Janice (Mark) Ellering of St. Cloud, Chuck Sand (special friend, Elsa Schmid) of Sartell, Lois (Brock) Shimon of Corcoran, and Harold (Robin) Sand of Freeport; nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren; brothers and sister, Paul (Dorine) Sand of Alexandria, Rose Poepping of Melrose, and Walter (Millie) Sand of New Munich; and sister-in-law, Theresia Sand of Richmond.

Eddie was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Sand; parents; sisters and brother, Marie Thull, Sylvester Sand, and Eileen Frieler; and step-grandson, Austin Shimon.

Serving as urn bearer will be Patrick Ellering. Cross bearer will be Travis Sand and scripture bearer will be Cole Sand. Reader will be Robin Hemmesch. Mass servers will be Nathan and Andrew Hemmesch. Gift bearers will be Lois and Brock Shimon. Eucharistic Minister will be Dick Frieler.
