Edwin J. "Ed" Gettel, 88 of Sauk Centre died Monday, June 27, 2005 at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2005 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Sauk Centre with Rev. Todd Schneider officiating. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8:30 p.m. and Friday from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre. Parish prayers will be at 5:15 p. m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Edwin Gettel was born on June 21, 1917 in Veblen, South Dakota to Ben and Kathryn (Illies) Gettel. The family moved to Blackduck and to Mahnomen before moving to Sauk Centre in 1934. In 1939 he went to St. Paul to work at a packing plant in South St. Paul. In 1941 he worked in New Brighton at a defense plant. He was united in marriage to Rose F. Schloegl on Feb. 19, 1941 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Ed was drafted in 1941 and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. In 1947 he purchased a farm near Westport, MN. They retired in 1976 and moved to Sauk Centre. Ed's favorite times were fishing, hunting, working in his garden, playing cards and casino hopping.

He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Sauk Centre. Ed was a former Ashley Township Board Member and a former member of the Sauk Centre Conservation Club.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Gettel of Sauk Centre; children, Edwin Gettel of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Eugene Gettel and Suzanne of Villard, Rosemary Marthaler (Virgil) of Sauk Centre, Geraldine Prestidge of Eagan, Gerald Gettel of Minneapolis; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; and sister, Frances Kramer of Long Prairie; step-mother, Maedine Gettel of Lengby, MN; half sisters and brothers, Connie Stringer (Earl) of Bagley, Sarah Falk of Wheatland, WY, Richard Gettel and Mark Gettel of Lengby.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son, David Gettel; 2 granddaughters, Jennifer Gettel and Kelly Prestidge; brothers and sister, Lawrence, August, Virgil, Frank, Stanley and Walter Gettel and Marie Smith.

Casket bearers will be Steve and John Marthaler, Jason and Mike Prestidge, George Schloegl and Lavern Gettel. Cross bearer will be David Schloegl.
