After a full and vibrant life dedicated to the Lord, Dorothy Josephine Ripka transitioned from this earthly realm to be reunited with her Savior on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at the age of 97.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 4 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Sauk Centre with Rev. Mark Botzet officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
The visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Dorothy was born July 30, 1927 to the late Henry and Mary (Wolbeck) Gerads on a family farm near St. Rosa. She grew up alongside her younger brother, Danny, and her cousin, Evelyn, who was more like a sister. She met the love of her life, Clarence Ripka, at a dance at the Sauk Centre Coliseum. Their love blossomed, and they were united in marriage on June 20, 1950. Together, they raised three children, Michael, Richard, and Mary, and made their home in Sauk Centre.
The couple loved camping trips in northern Minnesota and doted on their poodle, Ginger, who brought them so much joy. Dorothy was involved in the community, serving as a member of the Christian Mothers and Silver Sneakers. She was also a dedicated supporter of the local VFW. In her spare time, she enjoyed word search puzzles, tending to her plants and flowers, baking cookies, zucchini bread, and rhubarb desserts.
Dorothy’s passion for sewing began at a young age. She honed her skills over the years making clothing for the family. After working as an egg candler at Swift and Company, she embarked on a successful career at Fingerhut where she spent twenty-five years sewing a variety of items. She then spent twenty-five years working at Web Printing before she finally retired.
Dorothy was a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was known for her dedication to prayer, particularly the rosary. Her social nature and love for card games and dice-rolling brought joy and laughter to many gatherings. Dorothy had the warmest smile and a playful personality with quick wit. She cherished the company of family and friends, sharing stories, laughter, and an occasional beer or brandy. Dorothy looked forward to hosting lively “happy hours” with her grown children and their spouses, and always delighted in visits from the youngest members of her family. She was proud to share a birthday with her great-granddaughter, Josie.
Dorothy moved to Care Center Nursing Home in late 2024. Even in this new setting, her infectious personality quickly led her to make new friends, and she was recognized as the “Resident of the Month” for August.
Dorothy is treasured by her children, Michael (Kathy) Ripka of Osakis, Dick (Sharon) Ripka of Sauk Centre, and Mary (Mike) Kalina of Alexandria; six grandchildren, Anne (Rob) Payment, James Ripka, Elizabeth Miller (Cody), Jennifer Vait (Mark), Angie (Robbie) Betterman, and Jessie (Nate) Hjelle; twelve great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Jacob, Megan, James, Gavin, Breck, Ellie, Josie, Sophie, Wesley, Eloise, and Isabelle; and three great-great-grandchildren, Michel, Henry, and Charles.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, and several unborn grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
