Donald L. "Don" Stalboerger, age 83, of Grey Eagle, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, January 30, 2009 at Pine Haven Care Center in Melrose.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, February 6 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Ken Thielman and Rev. Mark Willenbring concelebrating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose.

Donald Stalboerger was born September 2, 1925 in Melrose to Henry and Bernadine (Schoenberg) Stalboerger. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force in Cuba during World War II. On June 18, 1949 he married Lorraine Haider in Melrose. He attended Melrose High School, St. Cloud State University and the Wisconsin School of Banking. Don was president of the Melrose State Bank for many years and later, the Zapp Bank of Melrose. He was very active in the Melrose community and involved in many organizations. Don was an avid outdoorsman and happily retired to his home on Big Birch Lake in 1987. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose and St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grey Eagle.

Survivors include his wife of almost 60 years, Lorraine (Haider) Stalboerger of Grey Eagle; daughters, Mary (Bill) Carter of Minnetonka, Judy (Tim) Smith of Maple Grove, Jean Wocken of Shoreview, Ann (Richard) Kalgren of Chanhassen and Amy (Glenn) Bauer of Melrose; 8 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren and 3 step great grandchildren; sister, Lorraine Wallentine of Hastings; and niece, Susan Rotty of Woodbury, MN.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Howard Wallentine.

Serving as urn bearer will be Amy Bauer. Serving as cross bearer will be Megan Bauer and scripture bearer will be Mary Carter. Flag bearer will be Ann Kalgren and gift bearers will be Jean Wocken and Judy Smith.

Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association or St. Mary's School Endowment Fund.
