Donald L. "Donnie" Klug, age 76 of Freeport, Minnesota died unexpectedly on Friday, March 16, 2018 during his morning walk near his home.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 23 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albany with Pastor Steven Olson officiating. Interment will be at Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery in Albany with military honors by the Albany American Legion.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church in Albany.
Donald Leonard Klug was born April 26, 1941 in Albany, Minnesota to Norbert and Mary (Obermiller) Klug. He attended school in Albany and later enlisted in the U.S. National Guard. On May 30, 1964, he was united in marriage to Janet Kerestes at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Albany. Donnie lived in the Holdingford and Albany area all his life. He and Janet farmed for many years; retiring in 2006. He enjoyed walking, fishing, helping grandkids farm, storytelling, biking, fixing things, carpentry work, and watching westerns on television. He was most passionate about spending time with his grandkids and collecting and fixing old tractors.
Donnie was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church and Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He served on the church council. He also was a member of the Albany American Legion.
He is survived by his wife Janet Klug of Freeport; daughters, Nancy Ann Gerads of Albany and Dawn Marie (Scott) Christman of St. Augusta; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; brothers and sister, Delmar (Elaine) Klug of Albany, Marilyn (Tom) Tomsche of Albany, David (Betty) Klug of Winstead, John (Mary) Klug of Avon, and Richard (Lois) Klug of Albany.
Donnie was preceded in death by his father, Norbert Carl Anton Klug on April 21, 1989; and mother, Mary Lydia "Mayme" Klug on December 26, 1998.
Casket bearers will be Crystal Hartung, Ryan Gerads, Tyler Gerads, Alyssa Hartung, Chelsea Kolstad, Travis Gerads, Michela Gerads, and Elizabeth Christman. Cross bearer will be Julia Christman and candle bearer will be Calvin Gerads. Acolytes will be Dylan Hartung and Cadence Hartung. Readers will be Alyssa Hartung and Chelsea Kolstad.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
