Donald "Don" P. Frie, 73, of Melrose died Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at the Melrose Area Hospital after a brave battle with cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 10, 2004 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Melrose with Rev. Vince Lieser officiating. Burial will follow St. Mary's Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 8 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home, Melrose. Melrose Veterans Honor Guard will pray at 7 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Donald Frie was born September 27, 1931 to Joseph and Marie (Welz) Frie. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Don was united in marriage to Rosalie Schlicht on May 30, 1955 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Melrose. He coached and taught at Belview, MN from 1956-1957 and at Browerville from 1958-1986. He served as City Administrator of Browerville for 17 years. The couple moved to Melrose in 1991 where he served on the Central Minnesota Federal Credit Union Board of Directors for 8 years. Don enjoyed his children, grandchildren and golfing. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose, Melrose Knights of Columbus, Council #1633 and Schanhaar-Otte VFW Post 7050.

Survivors include his wife, Rosalie Frie of Melrose; children, Peter Frie (Wendy) of Byron, Patti Mattos (David) of Savage, Margaret Hughes (Pat) of Austin, TX, and Paul Frie (Danielle) of Surprise, AZ; 7 grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Richard Frie (Marilyn) of Monticello, Juanita Hoeschen (Leo) of St. Paul, Tom Frie (Jane) of Moundsview, Rosie Peters (Ron) of Monticello, and Peter Frie (Arlene) of Robbinsdale.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and infant son, Michael Frie in 1961.

Casket bearers will be Mark, Dan, Eric and Mike Frie, Jeff Schlicht, Todd and Scott Hoeschen and Curt Olmschied, Cross bearer will be Graham Frie and scripture bearer will be Chelsea Mattos.
