Donald Barthel

Donald H. "Don" Barthel, age 77, of St. Cloud, died Tuesday, November 6, 2007 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 8 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Vincent Lieser officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Donald Barthel was born July 15, 1930 in Paynesville, Minnesota to Mathias and Johanna (Buettner) Barthel. On June 27, 1956 he married Arlene Steinhoff at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pearl Lake. For the past 20 years they had resided in St. Joseph. He was employed as a draftsman for Cold Spring Granite Company in Cold Spring for 35 years and retired in 1990.Don loved woodworking, spending time with his grandchildren, and his John Deere tractor.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene of St. Joseph; children, Randy Barthel of Sartell, Cheryl Orth of Sartell, Kim Bloch and her husband, Dan of St. Cloud, Scott Barthel and his wife, Linda of St. Cloud, Darcy Kern and her husband, Todd of St. Stephen; 13 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; sisters, Frances Schreifels and Lorraine Schreifels, both of Melrose, and Kathleen Middendorf of Freeport.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Allen and Robert Barthel.

Serving as casket bearers will be Randy, Scott, and Michelle Barthel, Todd Kern, Sarah and David Maloney. Cross bearer will be Barbara Schmitt and scripture bearer will be Mary Sand.
