Dolores K. "Lori" Ettel, age 81, of Freeport, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at the Melrose Area Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. and Rev. Ken Thielman concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Christian Mothers and Goldenaires Senior Citizens will pray at 4 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 5 p.m. Friday evening.

Dolores Borgerding was born May 20, 1927 in Freeport to Ben and Theresa (Hoeschen) Borgerding. On June 2, 1947 she married Alcuin Ettel at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Lori was a life long resident of Freeport and a homemaker who loved to bake and cook. There were always sweets on the kitchen counter. She loved to garden, canning much of her produce and always sharing it with her children. She made quilts, embroidered dish towels, and crocheted countless afghans for her children and grandchildren. She was a caring wife and mother, and a devoted grandmother. She will be greatly missed. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her husband, Alcuin Ettel of Freeport; children, Fred (Judy) Ettel of Freeport, Doris (Bob) Hock of Melrose, Dick Ettel of Blackduck, Judy Merwin of Plymouth, Mary (Larry) Shoemaker of Alexandria, Linus (Geri) Ettel of Freeport, Gary (Margie) Ettel of Albany, Terri (Chris) Ellering of Melrose, and Mark (Michelle) Ettel of Melrose; 15 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and two step great-grandchildren; brothers and sister, Alcuin (Margie) Borgerding of Freeport, Art (Nellie) Borgerding of St. Cloud, Tom (Ginny) Borgerding of Melrose, John (Darlene) Borgerding of Melrose, Bae Stroeing of St. Paul, and Jean (Frank) Osendorf of St. Joseph.

Lori was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Amelia Ettel; infant brother, Jimmy Borgerding; brother, Leo Borgerding; sister, Nellie Ehlert; and son-in-law, Dave Merwin.

Serving as casket bearers will be Mike Ettel, Matt Merwin, Brian Ettel, Jeff Ettel, Alex Ellering, and Nathan Ellering. Cross bearer will be Ethan Ettel and scripture bearer will be Michele Downing. Mass servers will be Zachary Ettel and Nathan Ellering. Gift bearers will be Amanda Merwin, Jessica Ettel, and Brandon Ettel. Lori's craft bearers will be Kimberly Shoemaker and Dawn Shoemaker. Lectors will be Brian Ettel and Kiersten Ellering.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
