Darin J. "Butch" Blommel, age 17 of Freeport, died Friday, October 31, 2014 at the St. Cloud Hospital from injuries sustained in an ATV accident.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 6 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Roger Klassen, O.S.B. officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Darin James Blommel was born August 25, 1997 in Melrose, Minnesota to Eugene and Marlene (Frericks) Blommel. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and was a junior at Melrose High School. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport.
Darin was easygoing, kind-hearted, and lived his life to the fullest. He enjoyed the outdoors, turkey and deer hunting, derby cars, metal work, 4-wheeling, and helping on the family farm. Darin's final act of kindness was to give the gift of life through organ and tissue donation.
Survivors include his parents, Gene and Marlene Blommel of Freeport; sister, Jennifer (Scott) Lang of Eden Valley, and their children, Nathan, Violet, and Zachary; sister, Lori (Brad) Lemm of Avon, and their children, Olivia, Reegan, and Tanner; brother, Andy Blommel (friend Corisa VanHeel) of Freeport; grandmother, Rita Blommel of Freeport; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; and special friend, Mariah Schwieters of Greenwald.
Darin was preceded in death by his grandfather, Maurus Blommel; grandparents, Elmer and Marcella Frericks; infant uncle, Thomas Frericks; uncle, Robert Frericks; and cousins, Bob and Matt Becker.
Serving as casket bearers will be Aaron Sand, Chris Sand, Lucas Job, Berkley Weber, Mitchell Welle, Shawn Scherping, Isaac Zink, and Cory Ahrens. Cross bearer will be Mariah Schwieters and scripture bearer will be Loren Frericks. Honorary bearers will be his nieces and nephews, Nathan, Violet, and Zachary Lang, and Olivia, Reegan, and Tanner Lemm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
