Cyril G. Scherer, age 78 of Freeport, died peacefully on Saturday, February 24, 2007 at the Regency Hospital in Golden Valley, Minnesota.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. The Reverend Roger Klassen, O.S.B. will officiate. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Freeport.

Friends may visit from 4:00-9:00 PM on Tuesday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10:00-11:00 AM on Wednesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport. Golden Years Senior Citizens will pray at 4:00 PM followed by parish prayers at 5:00 PM, Albany American Legion at 7:00 PM, and the St. Joseph's Men's Society at 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Cyril was born January 31, 1929 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Mathias and Elizabeth (Lahr) Scherer. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Carson, Colorado from 1954-1956. He married Margaret Rausch on June 4, 1957. Cyril was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. A hardworking, passionate farmer, Cyril moved from the family farm in St. Joseph in 1973 to Freeport, where he continued to farm.He was a member of the Albany American Legion Post 482, St. Joseph's Men's Society of Freeport, a former president of the Stearns County Farm Bureau, a member of the Farm Bureau Dairy Advisory Committee, and of the American Dairy Association.Cyril loved God's great outdoors"""especially the snow. He shared many memories with his family, of downhill and cross-country skiing, as well as snow-mobiling, card playing, and camping.

Cyril is survived by his wife, Margaret (Rausch) Scherer of Freeport, two sons"""James Scherer of Freeport and Thomas (Jenni) Scherer of Eden Valley; as well as daughters"""Diane Scherer of Albany; Lorna (Robert) Hammer of Coon Rapids; Theresa (Mark) Pearson of San Diego, California; Sandra (John) VonWahlde of St. Rosa; Linda Scherer (Kevin Wojahn) of Milaca; and Karen Scherer of St. Joseph; as well as 14 grandchildren.Cyril is survived by eight siblings: brothers"""Alcuin of Cold Spring; Elmer (Genni) of Chillicothe, Illinois; Francis of Marshall; and sisters"""Marcy Rueter of Freeport, Delores Trettel of Cold Spring, Fronie (Irvin) Adelman of Ortonville, Jenny (Linus) Kalthoff of Albany, Helen (Ken) Heinen of New London.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mathias and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Scherer, his sister Bernelda "Nellie" Lenzmeier, and his infant daughter, Barbara.

Cyril will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Serving as casket bearers will be Cody Von Wahlde, Jake Scherer, Karl Meyer, Joseph Steichen, Duane Koshiol, Roger Kalthoff, Gary Meirhofer, and Brian Rausch. Serving as cross bearer will be Barb Knutson and scripture bearer will be Kristi Spieker. Honorary bearers will be Joan Hemker, Richard Rausch, Gordon Rausch, Jack Rassier, Max Sand, Glenn Wilwerding, Wally & Alice Hoeschen, Bob & Rita Rassier, Donnie & Bernice Schmidt, Marvin & Monica Stanger, Maurus & Rita Blommel, Dave & Cyrilla Michael, Duane & Kathy Pung, and Jerome & Mary Ellen Rosen.
