Carl J. Schmidt, age 79 of Grey Eagle, died on Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at the Long Prairie Memorial Nursing Home in Long Prairie.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 21 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Rev. Arlie Sowada will officiate with interment following in the parish cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grey Eagle. Parish prayers will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday evening.
Carl Schmidt was born on July 3, 1924 at his home north of Hebron, North Dakota to Jacob and Anna (Glass) Schmidt. He was united in marriage to Rose Martin on November 17, 1947 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Gladstone, North Dakota. Carl graduated from the Glen Ullin, North Dakota high school. He worked at the Crawley Ranch for a time, then later attended Coyne Electrical College in Chicago, Illinois. He worked at the Lehigh Briquetting Company, near Dickinson, North Dakota as an electrician. In 1952 he bought a farm near Wadena, where he farmed and raised beef cattle. To supplement his income he worked for the Wadena Silo Company building silos. Later he worked for Northern Fabricating in Staples, as a welder, and still later at Uselman?s Implement as a jack of all trades. In 1988 the couple moved to their hobby farm near Grey Eagle to retire. Carl had a stroke in June of 1999, which disabled him and he had to enter the Long Prairie Memorial Nursing Home in Long Prairie. Carl loved working with animals and fixing things. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grey Eagle.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Schmidt of Grey Eagle; two children, Rodney (Kathy) Schmidt of Albert Lea and Patricia (Dennis) Lye of Taylor Mill, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Peter (Sue) Schmidt, Philip (Jeni) Schmidt, Rebecca (Justin) Trafton, Angela (Chad) Duerkop, Adam (Coleen) Lye, Bethany Lye and Benjamin Lye; one great granddaughter, Meagan Schmidt; twin sister, Elsie McCart of Seattle, Washington; brothers, Conrad Schmidt of Wadena and John Schmidt of Burlington, Vermont; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Jack, Frank, Nick and Henry Schmidt.
Serving as casket bearers will be Peter, Philip and Jim Schmidt, Rebecca Trafton, Angela Duerkop and Bethany Lye. Cross bearer will be Pete Nohner and honorary bearers will be Adam and Benjamin Lye.
