Bernice A. Scherping, age 95 of Freeport, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Monday, January 29, 2018 at CentraCare Health Hospital in Melrose, Minnesota.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, February 2 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport with Rev. Dan Walz officiating and Rev. Ralph Zimmerman and Rev. Geno Doyle concelebrating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church in Freeport. The Christian Women and Goldenaires Senior Citizens will pray at 4 p.m. Thursday evening at the church.
Bernice Ann Schiller was born December 4, 1922 in St. Anthony, Minnesota to William Sr. and Rose (Cherne) Schiller. On June 5, 1945 she married Edward Scherping at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Bernice enjoyed playing cards, going to the casino, playing BINGO, and putting together jig-saw puzzles. She was an excellent baker and always had her oven in operation. Her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were the joy of her life.
Bernice was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport, Christian Women, and the Goldenaires Senior Citizens.
Survivors include her children, Rosie Erickson of Waite Park, Jerrold "Butch" (Debbie) Scherping of Clearwater, Vern (Ginny) Scherping of Little Falls, Rootie (Brian) Holthaus of Albany, Mary (Dave) Ellering of St. Cloud, Rita Arendt of St. Cloud, and Ken (Mary Beth) Scherping of Freeport; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Clarence Schiller of California, Dorothy Nunes of California, Dolores Zimmerman of St. Cloud, Ellie Bovy of Minneapolis, and Jerome (Ardy) Schiller of Alaska.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Edward Scherping; brothers, William II, Alvin, and LeRoy Schiller; sisters, Rosemary Kay and Audrey Snyder; and son-in-law, Gus "Buster" Erickson.
Bernice's family would like to thank the staff of Mother of Mercy Nursing Home, Dr. Patrick Heller, Dr. Cody Wentland, Dr. Julie Klasen, and the hospital staff of CentraCare Health, Melrose for the wonderful care they gave our mom.
Serving as casket bearers will be Kenny Scherping, Tony Scherping, Rootie Holthaus, Mary Ellering, Jason Ellering, and Nick Ohmann. Cross bearer will be Charlene Ohmann and scripture bearer will be Dave Ellering. Reader will be Sue Monroe. Gift bearers will be Evie Ellering, Ella Ohmann, and Sam Ohmann.
