Bernard J. "Bennie" Van Hoorik, age 93, of Albany, formerly of Minneapolis, died peacefully Sunday, May 13, 2007 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany, Minnesota.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16 at Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Albany, Minnesota with Rev. Corwin Collins, OSB officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 292 of Richmond.
Friends may call Tuesday from 5:30 pm to 8:30 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Seven Dolors Catholic Church gathering area. VFW Post 428 of St. Cloud will pray at 7 p.m. followed by parish prayers at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Bernard Van Hoorik was born Feb. 5, 1914 in Farming Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to William and Margaret (Latzke) Van Hoorik. He was raised on a farm south of Albany. Bennie served as a cannoneer in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was awarded several medals for his service. After he returned from the service he fixed cars and tractors in the Albany area. Bennie moved to the Twin Cities and was then employed by McMartin Spec. as a security guard and later with Jacobson Machine Works until he retired. Bennie enjoyed fishing and reading. He was a life member of VFW Post 428 in St. Cloud.
Survivors include his sisters, Gertrude Tamm of Albany and Lucille Van Hoorik of Freeport; and many nieces and nephews.
Bennie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Alfred, Eleanor Fischer, Catherine Fuchs, Margaret Gertken, Robert, Alma Kunstleben, Joseph, Jacob, Mary Schulte, Anna Lang; and several nieces and nephews.
Casket bearers will be Jim Fischer, Howard Fuchs, Ralph Gertken, Donnie Schulte, Kevin Lang, and Roger Tamm. Cross bearer will be Ronnie Kunstleben. Scripture bearer will be Renee Weitgenant.
